[Hands-On Review] Best Instagram Comment-to-DM Tools: Free Plans & Forced-Follow Features Compared

You've probably noticed it by now: comment on a post, and a DM shows up in your inbox seconds later. Since I'm building out my own creator presence, I decided to dig into how these comment-to-DM tools actually work — and compare a few of them for you. Some of them can even force people to follow you before they're allowed to receive the DM.

This isn't a "read the marketing page and summarize it" post. I actually connected my real Instagram account to test each tool, and found that some of what's on their websites simply isn't accurate. Every claim below links back to its original source so you can verify it yourself.

Anywhere the table says "not mentioned" or "unconfirmed," that doesn't necessarily mean the feature doesn't exist — it just means the vendor's site doesn't say clearly. I'd recommend connecting your own account and testing before committing, rather than deciding purely off marketing copy.

Tool-by-Tool Breakdown

1. Meta's Native Feature — Free and the Best Option, If You Have It

Meta actually has a built-in comment-to-DM feature, but none of the three professional accounts (all linked to Instagram) I tested had access to it — it looks like it might still be in a gradual rollout, not available to every account yet.

Worth checking your own settings to see if you have it. If you do, it's the best option, because it's completely free. The downside is no forced-follow feature, but free is free.

2. Manychat — A Veteran Tool, Free but With a Tiny Quota

The upside is it's completely free, but the catch is a monthly cap of 25 "active contacts" — note that's not a count of DMs sent, it's the number of unique people who interacted with your automation. If one post's comments push you past 25 people, the free tier can't be topped up — you're forced to upgrade to the $14/mo plan to keep going.

On the plus side, it has a localized interface. As for whether it has a forced-follow feature, there's nothing about it on the site, so I can't confirm either way.

3. Kufu — Localized Interface, Annual Billing, Unlimited Comment Replies

You've probably seen Kufu ads on short-video platforms. Their free trial is only 14 days, after which you're forced into annual billing — the Community tier runs about NT$5,000/year, which works out to roughly NT$400/month, actually pretty reasonable.

The key selling point is unlimited auto-replies on comments. The forced-follow feature isn't a one-click toggle — you have to build it yourself inside the automation flow — which adds some complexity, but overall it's solid value for money.

4. InstantDM — English-Only Interface, Currently the Best Overall Value

InstantDM has no free plan, but at US$9.99/month billed annually, it's genuinely unlimited (that's the official claim) — no cap on automations or contacts, plus a built-in forced-follow feature. All things considered, this ends up being the best value option.

Appendix: Other Tools I Tested but Didn't Make the Cut

I tested more than just the four above — ReplyRush, DMLink, and a few others.

• ReplyRush: Free tier gives 1,500 DMs/month, but the free plan has zero comment-auto-reply functionality — you need the Lite plan ($10/month) for that.
• DMLink: Free tier gives 1,000 DMs/month, but you can only set it up on your 10 most recent posts.

Their comment-auto-reply features are relatively basic compared to the four above, which is why they didn't make it into the main comparison.

TL;DR

Everyone wants to spend their money wisely, and every one of these tools has the devil in the details — free doesn't mean usable, and cheap doesn't mean no hidden requirements. I'm still actively testing these (and a few others) to find the best value, and I'll keep this updated.

Quick summary:

• Want completely free → Check your account settings for Meta's native feature first; if you don't have it, Manychat is the backup, but watch that 25-contact cap — it fills up fast
• Want unlimited comment replies and are okay with annual billing → Kufu or InstantDM
• Best overall value right now → InstantDM
